Chapter 5 - Calypso



Summary: (Alex)

In the beginning The gods decide to send hermes down to Calypso and tell her that she must let him go. When she does so Odysseus makes himself a raft and sets out to sail to the country of Pheaecians. However, on the 18th day Poseidon finds him and creates a big storm that destroys his raft and then the goddess Ino helps him swim safely to shore and with Athene's help he is able to make it safely to this little stream where he finally rests.

Mt. Olympus- the gods are gathering in their assembly to discuss the release of Odysseus from Calypso's island
Calypso's Island- Hermes goes to deliver the gods' comand that Odysseus must be sent home.
The Land of the Phaecians- Odysseus goes to this island after being attacked by Poseidon.

Calypso is upset because Odysseus is leaving. She doesn't want to give him away after caring for him for so long. Also, she doesn't think it's fair that male gods can sleep around with who ever they want to and not get introuble for it while the female gods always get punsished.



What does she instruct Odysseus to do?

She tells his to start making a raft.



Why is Odysseus suspicious of her instructions?

He knows that none of the boats have ever been able to survive across the waters and he doesn't think a raft could.



What does Odysseus do the next day?

The next day, Odysseus starts cutting down trees to make the raft.

He creates a storm with with waves and heavy winds.

She gives him a veil to wrap around his waste to releave him of the fear of dealth and injury.


How does Athene help? (Bella B)
-calmed down all of the winds except for north, which flattened the waves in Odysseus' path.
-gave him a good idea
-filled his eyes with sleep once he is settled, to "soothe his pain and utter weariness"



What happens when he gets to the shore? (Bella B)
He throws back the Ino's veil.
